The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) came to Elon Musk’s defense on Monday after the billionaire entrepreneur faced criticism for a gesture that some left-leaning social media users labeled as a “fascist salute.” Musk, an outspoken supporter of President Trump, had sparked the controversy during Trump’s inauguration festivities.
“It seems that [Musk] made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute,” the ADL clarified in a statement posted on X.
The incident occurred as Musk, 53, placed his right hand over his chest and extended his arm upward, a motion interpreted by some as symbolic of his heartfelt support for Trump backers. The gesture, made during the Inauguration Day parade at Capital One Arena, quickly became the subject of debate online.
“Thank you for making it happen. Thank you, my heart goes out to you,” Musk stated as he performed the action.
The ADL acknowledged that Trump’s return to the presidency marks a “delicate moment” for many Americans, noting that heightened emotions are to be expected. “Many are on edge,” the organization wrote, expressing understanding of the tense political climate.
“Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety,” the ADL continued, highlighting how online platforms can exacerbate divisive narratives and fuel misunderstandings.
The organization urged restraint and called for a more measured approach to interpreting actions and intentions in such a charged atmosphere. “In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath,” the ADL advised.
The group’s statement ended on a hopeful note, encouraging Americans to focus on unity. “This is a new beginning. Let’s hope for healing and work toward unity in the months and years ahead,” the ADL concluded.
Musk, who will lead the newly established Department of Governmental Efficiency under Trump’s administration, played a pivotal role in Trump’s re-election campaign. The tech mogul contributed approximately $250 million in the final weeks of the race, supporting PACs and other efforts focused on digital outreach and voter engagement.
During the transition period, Musk spent considerable time at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, providing strategic input and solidifying his role in the incoming administration.
