In his early hours as the 47th president, Donald Trump plans to issue executive orders to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Mount Denali, according to a report from The New York Post.

The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed the Gulf of America, and Denali, the highest peak in North America, will revert to its previous designation of Mount McKinley. The mountain had been called Mount McKinley until President Barack Obama made the change in 2015.

These renaming decisions are meant to symbolize a tribute to “American greatness,” as outlined in a preview of the executive orders.

“President Trump is bringing common sense to government and renewing the pillars of American Civilization,” the document states.

The executive orders will direct the Secretary of the Interior to implement the name changes, which will result in the use of “Gulf of America” and “Mount McKinley” in official communications and federal maps.

It remains unclear whether the order will require these new names to be used in schools or in non-governmental contexts.

The draft document highlighted that restoring the name of Mount McKinley is especially significant to Trump, noting its 20,310-foot summit that makes it the tallest mountain in North America.

The federal government officially recognized it as Mount McKinley in 1917, honoring William McKinley, the president who was assassinated 16 years earlier.

McKinley served as an inspiration for Trump, particularly in his policies on tariffs and his expansion of U.S. territory following the Spanish-American War.

“McKinley was a very good, maybe a great president,” Trump remarked at a December Turning Point USA rally in Arizona. “They took his name off Mount McKinley, right? That’s what they do to people. Now, he was a great president, very good president. At a minimum, he was a very good businessman. He was a businessman, then a governor, very successful businessman.”

“President McKinley is honored for giving his life for our great Nation and dutifully recognized for his historic legacy of protecting America’s interests and generating enormous wealth for our Nation,” the draft explains.

Obama had renamed the mountain Denali to honor the name used by the indigenous Koyukon Athabaskans, the first people of Alaska.

The Alaska Legislature had petitioned the federal government to change the name in 1975.

Earlier this month, Trump also raised the idea of renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, calling the name “beautiful.”

“What a beautiful name and it’s appropriate,” Trump said on January 7.

During his first term, the president had frequent conflicts with Mexico, even threatening to impose heavy tariffs unless the country halts the flow of migrants crossing its border into the United States.

The Gulf of Mexico, which borders five states—Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida—is a key hub for offshore oil production, an industry Trump has promised to expand during his second term.

The draft praises the Gulf for being “pivotal” in its contributions to maritime industry, energy production, international trade, tourism, fishing, and recreation.

Trump, 78, is expected to sign the executive orders in the President’s Room at the Capitol after his inauguration. He may also choose to sign them at the White House following the inaugural parade.

The 47th president is anticipated to issue nearly 200 executive actions by the end of his first day in office.
