A member of the extremist Lev Tahor sect, which is headquartered in Guatemala, has been detained in El Salvador.
Elazar Rompler, an Israeli citizen, is currently being held while awaiting possible extradition to Israel, according to a statement released by El Salvador’s attorney general’s office.
The allegations against Rompler include accusations of mistreating students between the years 2009 and 2011, the statement detailed.
In 2020, the Yerushalayim District Court formally charged Rompler with child abuse.
Earlier this month, another individual connected to Lev Tahor, Jonathan Emmanuel Cardona Castillo, was taken into custody by Salvadoran authorities. He faces accusations of human trafficking, sexual assault, and mistreatment of minors. Castillo was reportedly caught attempting to cross the border from Guatemala into El Salvador near Ahuachapán.
Last month, Guatemalan authorities conducted a raid on the sect’s compound following allegations of human trafficking. During the operation, police evacuated women and children from the premises, placing them in a detention facility where they remain.
