On Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump posted a message questioning whether the “failing New York Times” would apologize to its audience for its inaccurate reporting on him over the years. Trump took aim at the newspaper for its coverage, accusing it of consistently getting the facts wrong.

“Will the failing New York Times apologize to its readers for getting years of ‘Trump’ coverage so wrong,” Trump wrote. “They write such phony ‘junk,’ knowing full well how incorrect it is, only meaning to demean.”

Trump also aimed his criticism at New York Times columnist Maggie Haberman, who frequently covers him. He mocked her, calling her “Magot Hagerman.”

He further disparaged Haberman, labeling her a “third-rate writer and fourth-rate intellect,” claiming she produces nothing but poor stories about him, despite rarely engaging with her.

“They do no fact checking, because facts don’t matter to them. I don’t believe I’ve had a legitimately good story in the NYT for years, AND YET I WON, IN RECORD FASHION, THE MOST CONSEQUENTIAL PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN DECADES. WHERE IS THE APOLOGY?” Trump demanded.

Haberman, who authored the book Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America, frequently writes about Trump and shares updates on him through her X account.

It remains unclear what specifically triggered Trump’s post about The Times and Haberman on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, Haberman and fellow journalist Jonathan Swan published two bylined stories about the president-elect. One covered a possible role for Trump aide Natalie Harp, while the other discussed allegations concerning one of Trump’s key advisers, Boris Epshteyn.
