Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy voiced optimism about the possibility of the war with Russia concluding by 2025.
Speaking at Kyiv’s Third Food Security Conference, themed “Grain from Ukraine,” Zelenskyy signaled his willingness to consider ideas from leaders across Africa, Asia, and Arab nations on resolving the conflict.
“We are ready to consider their proposals. I also want to see the proposals from the new US President,” Zelenskyy said, according to Turkey’s Anadolu news agency. “I believe we will see these proposals in January, and we will have a plan to end this war.”
In recent remarks, Zelenskyy speculated that the conflict might reach a swifter conclusion once Donald Trump takes office as President of the United States.
“The war will end faster with the policy of this team that will now lead the White House,” Zelenskyy said, referencing the incoming administration.
“This is their approach, their promise to their society, and it is also very important to them,” he elaborated, emphasizing the significance of the new U.S. leadership’s stance.
Reaffirming Ukraine’s commitment to diplomacy, Zelenskyy stated, “We must do everything to ensure that the war ends next year through diplomatic means.”
During his election campaign, Trump claimed he could end the Ukraine-Russia war within 24 hours and argued that the conflict would not have begun under his leadership.
Last July, Zelenskyy addressed these assertions, questioning the feasibility of such promises. “His desire to end the war should be based on some real-life experience. Well, it looks as if Donald Trump had already these 24 hours once in his time. We were at war, not a full-scale war, but we were at war, and as I assume, he had that time at his disposal, but he must have had some other priorities.”
Zelenskyy also stressed that Ukraine would not accept peace at any cost. “If we are talking about ending the war at the cost of Ukraine, in other words to make us give up our territories, well, I think, in this way, Biden could have brought it to an end even in five minutes, but we would not agree,” he said.
Following Trump’s recent election victory, Zelenskyy extended his congratulations and acknowledged Trump’s strategic philosophy for peace.
“I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer. I am hopeful that we will put it into action together,” he remarked.
Zelenskyy expressed anticipation for the partnership between their nations, adding, “We look forward to an era of a strong United States of America under President Trump’s decisive leadership. We rely on continued strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States.”
“I am looking forward to personally congratulating President Trump and discussing ways to strengthen Ukraine’s strategic partnership with the United States,” Zelenskyy concluded.
