Firefighters were actively battling a wildfire that engulfed 33 acres in Lakewood, NJ, this evening.

The stench created by the fire could be smelled across Lakewood and well beyond, in Jackson, Toms River, Howell and Brick.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service led the response to the blaze, situated near Pine Park and the Lakewood Country Club.

Dubbed the “Country Club Wildfire,” this latest incident has not caused any damage to structures, and no evacuations have been ordered at this time.

In response to the fire, emergency crews shut down Clearstorm Road between Brewers Bridge and Hope Chapel Road. To combat the flames, the NJFFS dispatched fire engines, bulldozers, and ground crews, while a helicopter monitors the situation from above.

The NJFFS is investigating the cause of the wildfire.

Since the start of the month, both New Jersey and Pennsylvania have experienced several wildfires. Dry conditions, high fire risk weather, and ongoing drought have prompted burn bans throughout the Philadelphia region. These restrictions aim to reduce the likelihood of wildfires and brush fires, which are overwhelmingly caused by human activity.
