Frustrated Chicago residents harshly criticized Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) during a recent city council meeting, condemning his proposal for a $300 million property tax hike to cover growing expenses tied to the city’s migrant crisis.
Black Republican voters were among the most vocal critics, calling Johnson a “criminal,” “bully,” and a “loser” during the heated session.
The Wall Street Journal recently labeled Johnson “America’s Worst Mayor,” reflecting the widespread dissatisfaction with his leadership. In April, he announced plans to request $70 million in additional taxpayer funds to supplement the $150 million already allocated for migrants in the 2024 budget, according to the Daily Mail.
Now, his push for an even larger $300 million tax increase was met with unified opposition from residents and a unanimous rejection by the city council.
One vocal critic, Dennis White, a Chicago Trump supporter wearing a “MAGA” hat, delivered a fiery speech to the mayor.
“How does it feel that Trump is in office right now? You see, Mayor Brandon Johnson, you underestimate us. You underestimate the black people and underestimate Chicago red,” White declared.
“We are a thorn in your side. If you don’t stop what you’re doing, we’re going to take matter into our own hands. Illinois is turning purple. We gonna turn red,” he continued.
“You know that Trump had pulled 45 percent of the voters in the state of Illinois, 37 percent in Chicago. That’s the statistic. That means that Illinois is turning purple. We gonna turn red.”
Another critic, Tyjuan Sims, expressed his frustration with Johnson and hoped President-elect Donald Trump would step in to address the city’s challenges.
“The feds need to address you! The DOJ needs to address you! And hopefully Donald Trump will address you,” Sims said. “You’re gonna protect the undocumented, while you’re gonna allow for the citizens in Chicago to suffer under your, what? Three percent?”
According to the Daily Mail, the proposed property tax hike could increase homeowners’ taxes by as much as four percent, exacerbating local anger.
Jessica Jackson, another resident dressed head-to-toe in red, compared Johnson to a playground bully and issued a warning about potential consequences.
“Those of us who grew up on the south side and west side of Chicago, we all know at some point that bully gets cornered in an alley and everybody come at him. And he ain’t gonna have nobody to help him,” she said. Turning directly to the mayor, she added, “That’s you!”
Jackson then addressed city clerk Anna Valencia, drawing attention to her outfit.
“This is the second time you showed up in city council wearing red. You know what it is!” she exclaimed.
“So you and the rest of ’em that know what time it is, y’all come on. You leave that loser where he is,” she continued, referring to Johnson. “He’s a loser! He’s a loser!”
Another resident, Mrs. Lawrence, also dressed in red, took the podium to criticize Johnson’s low approval ratings.
“14 percent rating is what you appear to have, Brandon Johnson,” she said.
“What about our real estate? Because, see, we paid for these properties for a purpose and not for you to go touchin’ it with $300 million that you want to siphon out of the citizens’ pockets,” Lawrence argued.
“Get rid of the illegals! And that will take your money right back. Start it off with that!” she shouted passionately.
