President-elect Donald Trump announced on Sunday night that he has chosen Brendan Carr, a senior Republican member of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to take on the role of its chairman.

Trump, who originally appointed Carr to the FCC in 2017, described him as a staunch defender of free speech. “His current term runs through 2029 and, because of his great work, I will now be designating him as permanent Chairman,” Trump, 78, said in a statement.

“Commissioner Carr is a warrior for Free Speech, and has fought against the regulatory Lawfare that stifled Americans’ Freedoms and held back our economy,” Trump added. “He will end the regulatory onslaught that has been crippling America’s Job Creators and Innovators, and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America.”

According to Politico, Carr will be able to assume the position of FCC chairman as soon as Trump takes office, as he is already serving on the commission.

The FCC operates as an independent body tasked with overseeing communications across state and international boundaries. Under outgoing President Biden, the agency has been led by Jessica Rosenworcel.
