New York City Mayor Eric Adams held a press conference on Wednesday, focusing on how the outcome of the 2024 presidential election will impact the city.
Addressing New Yorkers, Mayor Adams stated, “I want to say to our fellow New Yorkers that votes have been counted, and America has elected a new president, incoming President Donald Trump. As Americans, we respect the will of the people and are committed to the peaceful transfer of power.”
He extended his congratulations to the newly elected leadership, saying, “I want to congratulate President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and wish them all the best as they work to promote the interests of the American people.”
Mayor Adams spoke about the city’s intent to work with the incoming administration while maintaining the values that are fundamental to New York City, such as upholding women’s reproductive rights and supporting immigrant communities.
“In New York, women can be confident that their reproductive rights are secure,” he assured. “Abortion care will always be available in New York City for anyone who needs it, including women from outside the city who are denied care elsewhere.”
Reinforcing New York City’s commitment as a welcoming home for immigrants, the mayor highlighted the city’s dedication to a compassionate approach to immigration. He committed to advocating for a national immigration policy that is fair and humane, pushing Congress to fast-track asylum seeker status for those already in the city and pledging ongoing support, including legal assistance and essential services, regardless of immigration status.
On the topic of public safety following the election, Adams made clear that the NYPD would enforce the law. “While our city will always respect the right to peaceful protest, there will be zero tolerance for violence, vandalism, or other criminal behavior,” he cautioned.
The mayor also expressed appreciation for the efforts of Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz, recognizing their campaign’s impact. “I want to salute Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz for running a powerful campaign that inspired and uplifted women, communities of color, and millions of others across the nation,” he said. “The millions of ballots cast show that American democracy remains strong. It takes work, commitment, and grit, but together we will continue striving to make this a better nation for all.”
