Hormel Foods Sales LLC, based in Minnesota, has issued a recall for two Planters items manufactured at one of its facilities and distributed across five states in the southeastern United States due to the potential risk of causing fatal infections.

The affected products, Honey Roasted Peanuts and Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts, were produced by Hormel for Planters at a facility before being sent to Publix warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina, as well as Dollar Tree warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.

Upon production and distribution in April, Hormel identified the possibility of contamination with listeria monocytogenes within the packaged contents.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium capable of inducing severe and occasionally fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

“Healthy individuals who consume the organism could suffer short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea,” stated the voluntary recall notice.

Furthermore, listeria infections can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths in pregnant women.

The recall pertains specifically to 4-ounce packets of Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts and 8.75-ounce containers of Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts.

Cans of Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts bear a “Best if Used By Date” on the underside along with a UPC code on the side.

The UPC code for the implicated Honey Roasted Peanuts is 2900002097 with a best-by date of April 11, 2025, while for Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts, the UPC code is 2900001621, and the best-by date is April 5, 2026.

Hormel has confirmed that these are the only products subject to the recall.

The company also assured that there have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled items, and all affected retailers have been informed.

Individuals in possession of the affected products are strongly advised against consuming them, instead encouraged to either dispose of them or return them to the store of purchase for a replacement or full refund.

“Our dedication to food safety remains paramount,” Hormel emphasized. “A thorough investigation is presently underway to pinpoint the potential source of contamination.”
