Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu had a rare telephone conversation with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to an announcement from the prime minister’s office.

During their discussion, the leaders addressed multiple issues, including Israel’s ongoing support for Ukraine, particularly concerning Ukrainian refugees currently residing in Israel. They also focused on advancing civilian air defense systems.

Additionally, the upcoming visit of a large number of Jews to the Ukrainian town of Uman for Rosh Hashanah was a prominent topic of conversation. Reports earlier in the week had suggested that Kyiv might limit visitor entry to the site due to concerns over Israel’s level of assistance in Ukraine’s struggle against the Russian invasion.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu also emphasized the importance of taking all necessary measures to ensure the safe arrival of Jews in Uman this year, thereby enabling freedom of worship,” stated the prime minister’s office.

President Zelensky echoed the significance of providing security for the Jewish visitors. He mentioned that discussions had also covered how to respond to potential challenges arising from ongoing Russian threats, including missile attacks and Iranian drones.

Zelensky underscored the importance of Israel’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, expressing concerns about Ukrainian citizens being denied entry into Israel under the two states’ visa-free arrangement.

The recent tensions between Israel and Ukraine escalated following Israel’s decision to terminate medical insurance coverage for Ukrainian refugees within its borders. However, towards the end of August, Prime Minister Netanyahu instructed the cabinet to extend Israel’s humanitarian and financial aid to refugees from Ukraine, including the reinstatement of medical insurance.
