Several senior U.S. law enforcement officials disclosed that the U.S. Marshals Service suffered a security breach over a week ago, which compromised sensitive information. The spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service, Drew Wade, confirmed the breach in a statement, stating that the affected system contained law enforcement sensitive information, including administrative information, returns from legal processes, and personally identifiable information of USMS employees, third parties, and subjects of USMS investigations. The incident was discovered on Feb. 17, after the Marshals Service identified a ransomware and data exfiltration event that affected a stand-alone USMS system. The system was immediately disconnected from the network, and the Justice Department commenced a forensic investigation. Wade added that senior department officials were briefed, and they deemed the incident to be a major one. The investigation is ongoing. According to a senior law enforcement official familiar with the matter, the breach did not involve the database of the Witness Security Program, and no one in the witness protection program is in danger as a result of the breach. However, the official indicated that the incident is significant since it impacts law enforcement sensitive information related to Marshals Service investigations. Nonetheless, the agency has developed a workaround, allowing it to maintain operations and pursue fugitives. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)
