A New York City police officer shot and killed a machete-wielding man who allegedly attacked a woman and a dog and then rushed at officers Tuesday, the department said. The shooting in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood was the second police shooting in the borough in as many days, after an officer shot and wounded a man in the leg in central Brooklyn on Monday. NYPD Chief of Detectives Juanita Holmes said officers responded to multiple 911 calls about a man who was “acting erratic, laying on the ground, damaging parked vehicles, attempting to enter one caller’s front yard and chasing people in the area with the machete.” A woman walking her dog was attacked by the man, Holmes said, suffering deep cuts to her head and both hands. Her dog was cut in the shoulder. Both the woman and the dog are stable, Holmes said, but their exact condition wasn’t clear. Upon arrival at the east Brooklyn scene, officers were “immediately” charged by the man, who ignored commands to drop the blade, Holmes said. One officer fired a single shot that struck the man in the chest. The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. His name was not immediately released. The officers were not seriously injured, Holmes said. An investigation is ongoing. (AP)
