On Monday night, President Donald Trump kicked off a video call with U.S. military personnel based in South Korea by inquiring, “How is Kim Jong Un doing?” The call took place just hours after Trump’s inauguration, during the Commander-In-Chief Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C., where he spoke to American troops. During the call, Trump proudly shared details of his relationship with the North Korean leader. “You have somebody with pretty bad intentions, I guess, you know, you would say that,” Trump remarked, referencing Kim. “I developed a pretty good relationship with him but he’s a tough cookie.”

Lieutenant General Christopher LaNeve, the commanding officer of the Eighth Army in South Korea, sidestepped the question. “Every day we train, and we are planning for anything that you could possibly need us to do,” he replied. The U.S. maintains nearly 30,000 service members in South Korea, whose presence supports the South Korean military and serves as a deterrent to North Korea’s forces.

Later in the evening at the same event, Trump took part in a festive moment, waving a military sword as he danced to The Village People’s hit “YMCA,” before proceeding to slice into a ceremonial cake.
