President-elect Donald Trump intends to revoke the security clearances of 51 intelligence officials who previously stated that reports about Hunter Biden’s laptop bore “the classic earmarks” of Russian disinformation prior to the 2020 election, according to a recent report.
These officials, referred to as the “Spies Who Lie,” will lose their clearances as part of a series of executive orders Trump is expected to enact on his first day back in the Oval Office, Fox News reported. The information comes from a senior administration official familiar with the plans.
Although federal authorities later confirmed the authenticity of the laptop belonging to President Biden’s son, the intelligence experts who signed the 2020 letter have stood by their concerns about potential disinformation.
The New York Post’s pre-election reporting on the laptop revealed allegations of foreign influence-peddling, drug use, and other controversial activities involving Hunter Biden.
Emails retrieved from the device, which was abandoned at a computer repair shop in Delaware, indicated that Hunter Biden facilitated a meeting between his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, and a high-ranking executive of a Ukrainian energy company where Hunter served on the board.
A copy of the laptop’s hard drive was provided to The New York Post, while the physical device was handed over to the FBI by the shop owner in 2019.
Following the publication of these revelations, numerous former senior intelligence officials signed a letter suggesting that the emails bore “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation,” though no additional evidence was offered to support the claim.
Social media platforms briefly suppressed The Post’s reporting, but the so-called “laptop from hell” later became central to federal investigations. Prosecutors confirmed its authenticity during Hunter Biden’s gun trial last year.
According to an IRS whistleblower who testified before Congress in 2023, the FBI had already “verified” the laptop’s authenticity by November 2019.
Despite this, many of the intelligence officials who cast doubt on the laptop’s legitimacy either reaffirmed their stance or refused to comment when approached by Fox News last year.
An attorney representing seven of the letter’s signatories argued that the document was misinterpreted by the public.
“There continues to be by many a calculated or woefully ignorant interpretation of the October 2020 letter,” said Mark S. Zaid, who represented the officials.
He added, “It served as nothing more than a warning letter of what we have known for decades: certain foreign governments — including Russia — continue to try and actively interfere in our domestic affairs and our guard must remain vigilant.”
