Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) launched a fiery tirade against President-elect Donald Trump, asserting that the country was on the verge of facing “an authoritarian administration.”
The progressive congresswoman, who represents parts of Queens and the Bronx, unleashed her critique in a series of Instagram videos. She particularly took aim at TikTok for appearing to give credit to Trump after the social media platform returned online following a brief outage in the United States this weekend.
“We are on the eve of an authoritarian administration,” Ocasio-Cortez declared, making her comments one day before Trump’s inauguration. “This is what 21st-century fascism is starting to look like.”
The congresswoman expressed skepticism about TikTok’s decision to applaud Trump, emphasizing that he has not yet taken office and remains a “private citizen.”
“They are signaling that they are privately collaborating, they have agreed to privately collaborate with Donald Trump and the Trump administration,” she remarked, adding her concern that TikTok is being used as a “propaganda tool for the right.”
TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, a Chinese firm, was given until January 19 to sell its U.S. operations or face a ban. This ultimatum came after Congress passed a national security-focused measure in April, which President Biden later signed into law.
Trump has suggested he is open to working with the company to ensure TikTok remains available to U.S. users.
Ocasio-Cortez, who opposed the legislation targeting TikTok, also contended that right-wing ideologies dominate major social media platforms. She named X, led by Trump ally Elon Musk, and Meta, which oversees Facebook and Instagram, as examples.
Pointing to recent developments, Ocasio-Cortez noted that Meta’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, had ceased fact-checking initiatives on his platforms this month. She argued that this decision demonstrates Meta’s alignment with Republican interests.
Zuckerberg, who has met with Trump in Florida, also contributed $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund, she added.
The congresswoman, a member of the “Squad” now entering her fourth term, claimed that Republicans aspire to emulate Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has held power for over a decade.
“And so you can look to see how Victor Orban runs Hungary to get a taste of how they will try to govern and control media and companies in the United States,” she warned.
Critics have accused Orban of undermining Hungary’s democratic framework, including curbing judicial independence and suppressing dissent in the press.
On Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez referred to Trump as a “rapist,” referencing a recent settlement between ABC News and Trump. The lawsuit followed a misstatement by an anchor who inaccurately claimed during a live broadcast that Trump had been “found liable for rape” in 2024.
“All these journalists are like, ‘Congresswoman, are you going to the inauguration, Congresswoman, are you going to inauguration, are you going to the inauguration?’” she stated in another Instagram post.
“Let me make myself clear: I don’t celebrate rapists, so no, I’m not going to the inauguration.”
After a right-wing account shared the video clip, Ocasio-Cortez reiterated her stance on X with a sharp retort.
“Oh, are you triggered? Cry more,” she wrote.
