Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich shared his thoughts on social media, stating that while he vehemently opposes the Gaza ceasefire and the terms of the hostage release agreement, he is nevertheless “filled with joy” over the safe return of every hostage.

“I am very moved by the pictures of Romi, Doron and Emily. Serious people must make space for complexity,” he wrote, reflecting the mixed emotions he feels. Smotrich had voted against the agreement but has chosen to remain part of the governing coalition for now.

He elaborated on his position, explaining, “It is my duty and mission, as someone who represents a large public that sent its sons to the battlefield in Gaza for the hostages and sacrificed the most precious thing to them in a way that is completely disproportionate to its size and who opposes the deal.” This statement highlights the perspective of the Religious Zionism community, which Smotrich represents.

Summing up his emotions, he remarked, “The eyes cry bitterly but the heart is happy,” expressing the poignant mix of grief and joy that accompanies the return of the captives.
