President-elect Donald Trump may have faced two assassination attempts during his campaign last year, but a new Rasmussen Reports poll reveals that a majority of voters are worried about his safety during his upcoming inauguration on Monday.
The survey shows that 55% of likely U.S. voters express concern over Trump’s security at the swearing-in ceremony, with 31% stating they are very concerned.
On the other hand, 41% of respondents say they are not worried about his safety, including 26% who are not at all concerned.
In comparison, a 2017 Rasmussen poll found that 51% of voters were worried about Trump’s safety prior to his first inauguration.
This year, 64% of voters say they plan to watch at least part of Trump’s second inauguration on television. This includes 18% who intend to watch most of it and 26% who say they’ll watch the entire event. Meanwhile, 32% of voters indicate they do not plan to tune in at all. These numbers are nearly identical to the viewership data for Trump’s first inauguration eight years ago.
Republicans are the most likely to watch, with 85% planning to view at least some of the event on TV. Among them, 42% say they will watch the entire ceremony. Conversely, 54% of Democrats indicate they do not plan to watch any part of Trump’s inauguration. Among independents, 63% say they will tune in for at least a portion of the event, including 20% who intend to watch the full ceremony.
The poll also highlights concerns about Trump’s safety. Among Republicans, 80% express at least some concern, compared to 37% of Democrats and 52% of independents.
Regarding racial demographics, 63% of White voters, 61% of Black voters, 68% of Hispanic voters, and 59% of voters identifying as other minorities plan to watch at least part of the inauguration on TV. However, Black voters are generally less concerned about Trump’s safety compared to other racial groups.
Slightly more men than women plan to watch the ceremony, with 66% of men and 61% of women saying they will tune in for at least some of the event.
Older voters, particularly those aged 65 and above, are more likely to be very concerned about Trump’s safety. In contrast, younger voters, particularly those under 40, are less likely to watch the ceremony.
Nearly 90% of voters who supported Trump in the 2024 election say they will watch at least part of his inauguration. In comparison, 60% of those who backed Kamala Harris say they will not watch any portion of the event.
The survey also found that voters earning less than $100,000 annually are more inclined to watch the inauguration than those with higher incomes.
Conducted from January 13 to 15, the Rasmussen poll surveyed 1,330 likely U.S. voters and has a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
