In a recent covert mission in the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces successfully recovered the remains of Staff Sgt. Oron Shaul, an IDF soldier who was killed and captured by Hamas during the 2014 Gaza War, the military announced.
The recovery operation was a coordinated effort involving the IDF and the Shin Bet security agency. Elite units, including the Navy’s Shayetet 13 commandos and an advanced force from the Military Intelligence Directorate, participated in the mission.
The military did not disclose the timing of the operation or the exact location in Gaza where Shaul’s remains were found.
Once recovered, his body was transported to Israel and identified at the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute. After confirmation, his family was notified.
On July 20, 2014, during the 2014 Gaza War, soldiers from the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion were operating in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City using an M-113 armored personnel carrier. The vehicle became immobilized in one of the neighborhood’s narrow streets. While efforts were underway to free it, Hamas fighters launched anti-tank missiles at the APC. The attack resulted in the deaths of seven soldiers, including Shaul, whose body was subsequently taken from the scene by Hamas operatives.
