Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, described the forthcoming agreement for a ceasefire and the release of hostages between Israel and Hamas as a setback for Israel.
“It will be written in books that there was a mob who once killed thousands of children and women in Gaza,” Khamenei stated in a post on the social media platform X.
He credited the truce to “the patience of the people and the steadfastness of Palestinian resistance and the Resistance Front.”
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran also lauded the ceasefire, framing it as a success for the Palestinian cause and a failure for Israel.
“The end of the war and the imposition of a ceasefire… is a clear victory and a great triumph for Palestine and a bigger defeat for the monstrous Zionist regime,” the IRGC proclaimed.
Iran has been widely recognized as a major supporter of Hamas, channeling substantial financial aid, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars, to the organization and its leaders.
Following a period of tension, ties between Iran and Hamas appeared to strengthen in 2017, when the then-Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh expressed gratitude to Iran for its “unlimited” assistance to the Al-Qassam Brigades and its role in enhancing Hamas’ military strength.
Saleh al-Arouri, a former deputy leader of Hamas who was killed in Lebanon last year, had made multiple visits to Iran in recent years. During these trips, he held discussions with high-ranking officials, including Khamenei, signaling the resolution of previous disagreements.
