Israeli Religious Services Minister Michael Malkieli of Shas emphasized that passing a law to exempt chareidi men from military service is a critical issue for the chareidi parties, warning that they might leave the coalition if the law is not enacted.

Malkieli expressed optimism that the chareidi factions would be able to reach a resolution with Defense Minister Yisroel Katz and Yuli Edelstein, the chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, regarding the wording of the legislation.

Speaking on radio Kol Berama, Malkieli shared his confidence in Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, saying that “he understands politics” and “he understands the significance of the enlistment law for the chareidi public,” which, according to Malkieli, “entered the government for this law.”

“The chareidi parties will ultimately topple the government if the gedolei Yisroel instruct them to do so,” he declared.
