Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) has agreed to meet with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate, making him the first Democratic member of Congress to accept such an invitation. Fetterman joked with reporters that he hopes to be named “Pope of Greenland” during the meeting.

“I think that one, he’s the president, or he will be officially,” Fetterman, 55, said to CBS News, the outlet that first reported the upcoming meeting.

“And I think it’s pretty reasonable that if the president would like to have a conversation — or invite someone to have a conversation — to have it. And no one is my gatekeeper,” the 6-foot-8 senator from Pennsylvania, who is known for wearing gym shorts in Congress, bluntly told the network.

“I’m angling to be named the Pope of Greenland,” Fetterman later joked to reporters on Capitol Hill, referencing Trump’s interest in annexing the icy Danish territory.

It remains uncertain when Fetterman and Trump will actually sit down for their discussion.

Fetterman, who was once part of the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party, has recently gained attention for his candidness in speaking his mind.

He has been a staunch supporter of Israel and has openly discussed the influence of Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on President Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 race.

“I am not the senator for just Democrats in Pennsylvania, I’m everyone’s senator,” he said to reporters about his upcoming conversation with the 78-year-old Trump.

In the wake of Trump’s historic re-election, many Democrats have started to warm toward him, despite previously labeling him a “threat to Democracy” and even comparing him to Adolf Hitler.
