Devastating aerial footage captured vast areas of Los Angeles, ravaged by wildfires, resembling a war-torn landscape. The drone footage swept across a deserted neighborhood, where homes and structures lay in ruins, covered in ash and dark, smoky dust from the flames. At least five people have died, and over 130,000 individuals are under evacuation orders due to the disaster.
Entire blocks were reduced to ash by the fires, which began Tuesday morning in the upscale Pacific Palisades area, causing widespread damage to thousands of properties. The footage revealed the skeletal remains of homes, with yards filled with burnt debris, as the camera moved over the decimated neighborhood, where only small remnants of fires lingered.
The footage also showed heavy clouds of gray smoke swirling in the air, tinged with orange from the flames.
Officials warned that increasing winds could worsen the situation, feeding the five separate fires. As of Thursday, three of them were completely uncontained, having already scorched nearly 30,000 acres (47 square miles) in Los Angeles County.
The terrifying Santa Ana winds, with gusts surpassing 100 miles per hour, have propelled several fires from small sparks to uncontrollable blazes, causing severe damage across the region. At least five fatalities have been reported, and countless structures have been destroyed.
Vice President Kamala Harris, identifying as “a proud daughter of California,” urged residents in the affected areas to evacuate if instructed to do so.
Around 130,000 Californians are currently under evacuation orders due to the multiple major fires, including the Palisades Fire near Los Angeles, the Eaton Fire north of Pasadena, and the Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills.
The wildfires tearing through the Pacific Palisades have also forced numerous Hollywood celebrities to evacuate their homes. Meanwhile, more than 360,000 people were left without power Thursday morning, prompting Governor Gavin Newsom to deploy over 600 National Guard members to assist in the region.
