The U.S.-provided Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, which has been stationed in Israel since October, successfully intercepted a missile fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen early Friday morning, marking its first operational deployment in the country.
The missile attack came after Israel launched a major airstrike, “Operation Sounds of the Vineyard,” against Houthi targets in Yemen on Thursday night. This operation, which Israel deemed its most substantial offensive against the group so far, provoked the missile response from the Houthis.
At 3:29 a.m., sirens blared throughout central Israel, including the Tel Aviv area, Sharon, and Shfela regions. The interception by the THAAD system prevented any fatalities or direct damage. However, Magen David Adom (MDA) reported that 18 individuals required medical attention for injuries sustained while rushing to shelters, and two others were treated for anxiety-related issues.
The missile strike caused a brief disruption in air traffic. Four El Al flights traveling to Ben Gurion Airport from Paris, Athens, Berlin, and Munich were redirected over the Mediterranean. Flights resumed normal operations roughly 30 minutes after the sirens ended.
France strongly condemned the Houthi missile attacks, including the ballistic missile launch and ongoing drone assaults on Israel. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the actions as “unacceptable,” stressing that they destabilize the region and must cease immediately. France reaffirmed its unwavering support for Israel’s security and regional stability.
The THAAD system, operated by about 100 U.S. military personnel in Israel, is designed to intercept incoming missiles at high altitudes, even outside of Earth’s atmosphere, using kinetic energy. With capabilities similar to Israel’s Arrow missile defense system, THAAD is capable of targeting different phases of an enemy missile’s trajectory.
The U.S. deployed the THAAD system to Israel at its request, both to act as a strategic deterrent and to show military support in the region. Israeli officials regard THAAD as a crucial addition to their existing multi-layered defense systems, especially in light of the increasing threats, particularly from Iran.
