Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President-elect Trump, announced on Saturday that she is withdrawing from the race to fill Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio’s seat in the U.S. Senate.

“After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

President-elect Trump has selected Rubio for the role of Secretary of State.

“I could not have been more honored to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida,” Lara Trump expressed.

The wife of Eric Trump, the president-elect’s son, stepped down from her position as co-chair of the Republican National Committee earlier this month.

“I have read so many of your kind messages and I cannot thank you enough,” Lara Trump shared, adding that she has an “exciting announcement” to make in January.

She emphasized her continued enthusiasm for public service, stating she looks “forward to serving our country again sometime in the future.” For the time being, she extended her best wishes to Governor Ron DeSantis regarding the appointment.

A source within Trump’s political circle told Fox News Digital that the president-elect had initially urged DeSantis to appoint Lara as Rubio’s successor. However, Trump later acknowledged to reporters that he didn’t necessarily expect the governor to choose her.

“That’s his choice,” Trump remarked.

The replacement for Rubio’s Senate seat will be selected by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who will fill the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.

The seat will be open for election again in 2026 for a full six-year term.

While Lara Trump had previously indicated she was “seriously considering” the Senate role, she expressed uncertainty about whether it was the right move for her.

Governor DeSantis has stated he intends to make an appointment by early January.
