UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, known for her outspoken anti-Israel views, told British journalist Piers Morgan in an interview that Israel’s actions in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack were illegal. Albanese stated that while Israel had the right to defend itself on the day it was attacked, including using force and detaining individuals involved in the attack, “Israel didn’t have the right to wage a war against the Palestinians in Gaza.”
Morgan countered Albanese’s argument by asserting that Israel had every right to target the 3,000 terrorists responsible for the October 7 attack, especially since “it doesn’t stop at the border.” Albanese responded cautiously, warning Morgan that the “eye for an eye” logic might justify the actions of Hamas on October 7. She continued, “The fact that we call it terrorism doesn’t justify what Israel has done since,” adding that Israel’s military response was “not proportionate.”
Regarding the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders such as Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Albanese argued that the ICC’s case was too narrow, contending that it should address Israel’s military actions beyond its borders. She called the ICC’s actions “necessary” and “long due,” adding that the warrants were “very meaningful.”
Albanese’s anti-Israel stance became widely recognized in 2022, following antisemitic posts she made on social media, including claims that the “Jewish lobby” controlled the U.S. At the time, Albanese denied that her remarks were antisemitic, claiming they had been “mischaracterized.” Since the Hamas attack on October 7, she has continued to condemn Israel’s right to defend itself, even suggesting that Israel has no right to do so.
Albanese also denied that the Hamas massacre on October 7 was motivated by antisemitism. In July, she publicly supported a social media post comparing Prime Minister Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler. In response, Israel’s Foreign Ministry criticized her as being “beyond redemption” on the platform X. A month later, in August, she accused Israel of committing “genocide” after the IDF targeted a Hamas command center embedded in a mosque at the Al-Taba’een school compound.
