Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed concerns about President-elect Donald Trump’s safety as he awaits his inauguration in January.
“What was most striking … was not even that absolutely uncivilized means of struggle were used against Trump, absolutely uncivilized, up to and including attempted murder, and more than once,” Putin remarked during a press conference in Kazakhstan on Thursday.
He warned, “By the way, in my opinion, he is not safe now.”
Speaking at length during the press conference following the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Summit, Putin criticized the treatment Trump faced leading up to the 2024 election.
“What stood out to me the most was how, as part of the election campaign, they not only subjected [Trump] to humiliating, baseless judicial proceedings, but they also went after his family, including his children. Even common thugs don’t behave that way here,” Putin stated.
He elaborated further, calling the attacks worse than criminal behavior. “Gangsters don’t target women and children; they leave them out of it,” Putin noted.
He added: “It’s men that fight with each other. But these people did target [the family]. It’s just vile, another clear sign of the moral decline of the current U.S. political system.”
This year, Trump has survived two assassination attempts. In July, a gunman nearly succeeded in attacking the former president at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Another attempt occurred in September, when the Secret Service thwarted a plot involving an armed man on Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course as he was playing.
