President-elect Donald Trump shared on Wednesday that he had received confirmation from Mexico’s newly inaugurated president that the country would take steps to halt migration through its borders and prevent migrants from reaching the United States.

“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump stated on Truth Social.

“She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,” he added.

Trump, 78, mentioned that the two leaders also addressed the issue of illegal drugs entering the United States from Mexico during their “very productive conversation.”

“We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs,” Trump said.

“It was a very productive conversation!”

Sheinbaum Pardo, 62, a scientist and the former mayor of Mexico City, made history as Mexico’s first female president when she was sworn into office in October.

Trump praised the conversation, calling it “very productive,” while noting the significance of their discussions.

Sheinbaum Pardo echoed Trump’s comments in a social media post, confirming that she assured him the migrant caravans heading toward the US border were being dealt with by Mexican authorities.

“I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump,” Sheinbaum Pardo wrote on X.

“We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico.”

She went on to explain that the two also discussed enhancing cooperation on security matters within the bounds of Mexican sovereignty and efforts to combat fentanyl consumption within the country.

“We also discussed strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl,” she added.

Trump had previously announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican imports, aiming to force Mexico to take stronger actions against illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

In addition to Mexico, Canada and China would also face 25% and 10% tariffs, respectively, under the executive order, Trump revealed.

Trump later suggested on Truth Social that Sheinbaum’s commitment to curbing migration into the US would take effect immediately.

“Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately,” the former president declared.

“THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!”

Trump has made it clear that one of his first actions upon assuming office on January 20 will be to initiate a sweeping deportation effort, positioning it as the largest in U.S. history.

Earlier this month, Trump confirmed he would declare a “national emergency” to expedite the removal of undocumented migrants, utilizing “military assets” to support the operation once he returns to the White House.

He is also expected to reinstate a series of policies designed to restrict illegal border crossings, such as the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for their hearings during his first term.

In addition, Trump revealed plans for a significant advertising campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl.

“Millions of lives being so needlessly destroyed,” Trump remarked about the drug.

“By the time the Campaign is over, everyone will know how really bad the horror of this Drug is.”
