Rav Mordechai Yaakov (known as Reb Yankel) Soloveitchik, Rosh Mesivta of Yeshivas Brisk and the eldest son of the Brisker Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Avrohom Yehoshua Soloveitchik, was honored last night for the first time with being Mesader Kiddushin at the wedding of one of his talmidim.

Rav Yankel was honored at the instruction of his father, the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Avrohom Yehoshua, who, in response to the request of a talmid to be Mesader Kiddushin at his wedding, directed him to his eldest son, Rav Yankel.

Indeed, after the request, Rav Yankel graciously accepted and conducted the Kiddushin for the first time at the Kinor Dovid Hall in Beit Shemesh.

This marks the first time in Brisk history that a son has been honored with Siddur Kiddushin while his father is still alive.

Almost twenty years ago, Rav Avrohom Yehoshua appointed his eldest son, Rav Mordechai Yaakov, to deliver shiurim at the yeshiva. Over the years, other sons have also been appointed as maggidei shiur, but the eldest son, Rav Yankel, is widely regarded as the future successor.

Rav Yankel is known for his resemblance to his father, both in his appearance and in the way he delivers his shiur. He listens to his father’s shiur in the morning and delivers it in the afternoon, almost without any changes. Occasionally, he will add a novel thought of his own to his father’s shiur, which stirs some excitement in the yeshiva. Rav Yankel accompanies his father to many events, and alongside his Brisk leadership style, he is beloved by his talmidim and known as a person of pleasant manners.

Rav Yankel today gives shiur to over two hundred yungeleit and bochurim.
