Prominent attorney Alan Dershowitz has announced that he is assembling a “legal dream team” to represent Israel both in the courtroom and on the global stage.

In an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, Dershowitz referred to the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant, stating, “this case will be tried in a courtroom in The Hague. It will also be tried in the court of public opinion, both in the US and throughout the world.”

Dershowitz shared that his team will include distinguished figures such as former US Attorneys General Michael Mukasey and William Barr, ex-Solicitor General Seth Waxman, former FBI Director Louis Freeh, and Irwin Cotler, who previously served as Canada’s Attorney General and Justice Minister.

It remains unclear what role, if any, the legal team will play in the proceedings at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Dershowitz emphasized that the team’s approach will be twofold: to argue that the ICC lacks jurisdiction over the case and to demonstrate that Israel’s military actions in Gaza do not breach international law.

The ICC made waves last week with its unexpected issuance of arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant over the ongoing Gaza conflict. This unprecedented action places the two leaders in jeopardy of arrest in much of the world. It marks the first time the ICC has targeted leaders of a democratic nation with arrest warrants.

Additionally, the court issued a warrant for Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif, who Israel claims was killed by an IDF strike in Gaza in July. ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan had requested arrest warrants for Deif, as well as for slain Hamas leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Yahya Sinwar, in connection with the group’s October 7, 2023, massacre that ignited the current war in Gaza.
