Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida has said he plans to make a decision on who he will tap to replace outgoing Sen. Marco Rubio in the US Senate.  Sen. Rubio will be leaving his position in the Senate to become Trump’s Secretary of State.

Governor DeSantis says his office has begun the process of vetting several possible candidates.  One candidate gaining a lot of noise is President Trump’s daughter in-law, Lara Trump.  Lara Trump is currently the Republican National Committee co-chair, and some Trump allies have begun to call for her to become Florida’s next Senator, including Sen. Rick Scott, Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Katie Britt of Alabama, as well as Rep. Anna Paulina Lune of Florida.

Meanwhile, some other people rumored to be in the running include DeSantis’s chief of staff James Uthmeier, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez and state Attorney General Ashley Moody, outgoing Florida House Speaker Paul Renner and former state House Speaker Jose Oliva.

Under Florida law, the Governor has the power to select a replacement to temporarily fill a vacant Senate seat until the next regularly scheduled general election, which in this case would be in 2026, can be held in 2026.

Speaking about the vacancy, DeSantis said in a statement: “Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results.”
