An American Israeli who visited a Lego store in Manhattan with his son, was denied the ability to make a custom figurine featuring a yellow hostage ribbon, due to the hostages being a “political issue.”
Shai Davidai, a professor and Columbia University and outspoken Israel supporter, visited the fifth avenue Lego store in Manhattan with his eight-year old son, and requested to make a Lego figurine matching his shirt, which featured a yellow ribbon in support of the hostages, and the words “Bring them home” on the back.  However, Davidai says the store manager intervened, and did not allow the figurine to be made, saying “The hostages are a political issue.”
As Davidai explains, the store gives customers the ability to “create your mini-figurines and while you wait for them to be printed out, you choose things like what kind of legs you want them to have, all the fun stuff about Lego.”
Davidai posted about his experience on social media, saying: ” I don’t want people to protest against Lego, I just want Lego to do better.”
The Lego store in Israel features displays and Legos in support of the hostages, implying this decision was made by the store manager in Manhattan, and was not a company wide policy.
Multiple requests for comment by the Jewish News have gone unanswered by Lego.
