Kamala Harris has officially acknowledged her loss in the 2024 presidential race. On Wednesday, Nov. 6, the 60-year-old vice president made a concession call to the President-elect, Donald Trump, who is 78. According to a senior aide from Harris’s team, she congratulated Trump and offered her formal concession.

In their conversation, Harris reportedly emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth transfer of power between administrations. She also expressed her hope that Trump would work to represent and serve all Americans.

Later in the day, the Democratic presidential candidate is scheduled to address the public about her loss. Her speech will take place at 4 p.m. ET from Howard University in Washington, D.C.—a historically Black institution where Harris earned her bachelor’s degree.

Harris initially entered the presidential race on July 21 after President Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy, lending her his full endorsement. The 81-year-old Biden had previously defeated Trump in the 2020 election with a total of 306 Electoral College votes to Trump’s 232.

In July, Biden shared his endorsement on X, saying, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee for our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

Shortly after Biden’s announcement, Harris confirmed her presidential bid in a statement shared by the Biden campaign. She described Biden as “selfless and patriotic” and expressed her appreciation for his support.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris stated. “Over the past year, I have traveled across the country, talking with Americans about the clear choice in this momentous election. And that is what I will continue to do in the days and weeks ahead. I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda.”

The following day, Harris secured the Democratic nomination, obtaining more than the 1,976 pledged delegates required to formally become the party’s nominee at the Democratic National Convention.
