The Israeli cabinet has approved a second national day of mourning to commemorate the October 7 attack, to be observed according to the Hebrew calendar. The day will be marked by a state ceremony organized by Transportation Minister Miri Regev.

This additional day of mourning will take place on the 25th of Tishrei (October 27-28), just three days after Simchas Torah, which coincided with the Hamas attack last year.

As reported by Hebrew media, Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and other high-ranking officials are expected to attend the ceremony. This will occur only a few weeks after the nation observed the first anniversary of the deadly attack.

The second official day of mourning will include special programs in schools and the military, flag lowering to half-staff, and the closure of entertainment venues.

Families of hostages and other victims of the October 7 attack had vehemently opposed Regev’s appointment to oversee this week’s official ceremony marking the attack’s anniversary. Several Gaza border communities accused the government of using the state ceremony as a cover to avoid accountability for its failure to prevent the attack and for its inadequate response to the aftermath in those communities.
