It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Avrohom Asher Sofer zt”l, the rov of the Ohel Moshe Shul in Bnei Brak. He collapsed in his home in Bnei Brak last night. He was 88.

Rav Sofer was a son of Rav Menachem and Mrs. Ita Sofer. He was a grandson of the Tepliker Rov.

In his youth, Rav Sofer studied at the Ponevezh Yeshiva and was very close to the roshei yeshiva.

He was a cousin of Rav Tzvi Friedman, the rov of the Ohr Chaim neighborhood in Bnei Brak, and they studied together in their youth at Ponevezh Yeshiva.

Rav Sofer served as a halachic authority for many after learning from the great poskim, including Rav Nissim Karelitz zt”l and, in later years, Rav Mordechai Gross.

For many years, he served as the head of kollelim in Netanya, where he influenced many.

In the last decade, he became the rov of the Ohel Moshe kehillah in the western part of Bnei Brak, near his home on 7 Rechov Mintz.

About a year and a half ago, he was struck by a severe illness that caused him much suffering. As mentioned, last night, with the arrival of Yom Kippur, he was niftar.

He is survived by his only son, Rav Aharon Dovid Sofer, rov of the Alfei Menashe kehillah in Bnei Brak, as well as his daughters, the wives of his sons-in-law, Rav Meir Gafni, rov of the Heichal Yitzchak kehillah in Modi’in Illit, Rav Chaim Kenig, and Rav Nesanel Shmueli.

The levayah was held at the Ohel Moshe shul on Rechov Rabi Akiva Street in Bnei Brak, followed by kevurah in Elad.

Yehi zichro boruch.
