A disturbing incident of antisemitic violence occurred on Wednesday morning outside the Foggy Bottom Metro Station in Washington, D.C., when an Orthodox Jewish man was physically assaulted and subjected to antisemitic rhetoric by an assailant. The victim, Ariel Golfeyz, is a member of Kesher Israel Synagogue, located less than a mile away from the attack, and was wearing a yarmulke when he was attacked. The assailant punched him repeatedly, knocking off his headphones, and grabbed his neck from behind. The altercation continued on the ground and in nearby bushes until the victim bit the assailant’s leg, at which point a Metro Transit Police Department Special Police Officer to intervene and apprehend the assailant. During the attack, the assailant spouted anti-Semitic conspiracies, including claims that Jews have controlled the world’s money and banks for the past 100 years and are responsible for a genocide in Gaza. Golfeyz sustained multiple bruises and scratches and is currently undergoing medical assessment, testing, and follow-up due to biting the assailant in self-defense. The MPD has charged the attacker, identified as Walter James, with Assault with Hate/Bias. James had been previously arrested in July for a trio of crimes, including assaulting a police officer.
