A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) asylum official has been placed on administrative leave after it was revealed that she previously served as a spokesperson for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and posted inflammatory remarks on social media regarding Israel. Nejwa Ali, who works with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), had previously worked as a public affairs officer for the PLO’s US delegation in 2016 and 2017.

Ali, who adopted the username “Falastine Mi Amor” on private social media accounts, expressed her support for Palestinian causes and posted provocative comments about Israel, particularly in response to the conflict involving Hamas.

On October 7, the day Hamas launched their murderous attack, Ali posted, “Palestinians have been suffering under Israel’s brutal, illegal, military, APARTHEID occupation for more than 75 years.” She also posted images of armed terrorists paragliding into Israel and used explicit language to express her views, stating, “[Curse] Israel, the government, and its military.”

In subsequent posts, Ali continued her harsh rhetoric, including remarks like “respect our existence or expect resistance” and further expressions of her disdain for Israel and Israelis. She even included an antisemitic cartoon in her posts.

USCIS spokesperson Matthew Burke announced that Ali had been placed on administrative leave, stating that the agency condemns antisemitism and violent rhetoric and holds its employees to high ethical standards, both on and off duty. However, Ali claimed she still worked for DHS and refused to disclose her previous job with the PLO.

Several individuals, including Senator Josh Hawley, have called for Ali’s employment to be terminated. Hawley argued that Ali’s prejudicial views could have influenced immigration cases involving Palestinian, Israeli, or Jewish applicants and demanded her immediate termination.

USCIS procedures involve thorough vetting and extensive background checks for permanent positions, and its handbook instructs employees not to post discriminatory, obscene, harassing, or intimidating content on social media.
