Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu brought an archaeological discovery from the Tel Yericho archaeological site to the UN General Assembly. Recently, UNESCO designated this site as a “Palestinian heritage site.”
It remains uncertain whether Netanyahu plans to incorporate this artifact into his forthcoming General Assembly speech. However, Israel National News has obtained information indicating that during a recent cabinet meeting, Netanyahu engaged in a heated discussion with several ministers regarding the UNESCO decision. In response, he requested a position paper representing Israel’s perspective, emphasizing that the UNESCO ruling constitutes an injustice that disregards the realities on the ground and the historical significance of ancient Yericho. Additionally, he sought an ancient artifact to underscore the Jewish people’s historical link to the site.
Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu provided the Prime Minister with a comprehensive position paper, accompanied by an ancient historical item that attests to the enduring connection between the Israeli people and their homeland. Minister Eliyahu also expressed his intent to engage with UNESCO officials to safeguard the Jewish heritage in Yericho. This commitment aligns with the decision to allocate significant funds for the development and preservation of heritage sites in Judea, Samaria, and the surrounding areas.
Minister Eliyahu emphasized the importance of preserving their heritage, stating, “Our heritage is our national strength, and we have no intention of relinquishing it. Attempts to fabricate a legacy for an invented nation will not succeed.”
The Prime Minister’s Office did not provide information on whether the UNESCO decision was discussed during Netanyahu’s recent meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. While Netanyahu did criticize the United Nations’ unilateral actions on numerous occasions during the meeting, the official statement released by his office did not specifically mention the UNESCO ruling.
