The Wall Street Journal released an op-ed on Friday morning that strongly criticized the Biden administration’s treatment of the Israeli government. In the piece titled “What Does Biden Have Against Israel?” the WSJ’s editorial board questioned President Biden’s consistent snubs, criticisms, and directives aimed at the Israeli government. The op-ed highlighted the stark contrast in the President and his administration’s treatment of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his governing coalition compared to the ruling mullahs in Iran.
The op-ed also pointed out that this week, Biden once again publicly declined to invite Prime Minister Netanyahu to the White House, attributing this decision to Netanyahu’s coalition partners. The cumulative effect, according to the WSJ op-ed, is that Israelis perceive the U.S. as siding with their opposition parties. The editorial criticized this approach, stating that it is an inappropriate way to treat a democratic ally and pursue U.S. interests, especially considering that Netanyahu’s Likud Party has held power for the majority of the past 25 years.
WSJ‘s editorial board wrote, “Why does President Biden go out of his way to snub, criticize and give marching orders to the government of Israel? At least rhetorically, the President and his Administration treat Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his governing coalition worse than they do the ruling mullahs in Iran.”
The op-ed acknowledged that the debate over judicial reform in Israel is an internal matter for Israelis to discuss without the need for President Biden’s commentary. It argued that the President’s Israel policy has been counterproductive, raising questions about how it promotes peace when it appears to endorse the notion that Jews are intruders in Judea and at the Western Wall.
“The effect of this piling on is for Israelis to see that the U.S. sides with their opposition parties,” the WSJ op-ed added. “This is no way to treat a democratic ally and no way to pursue U.S. interests while Mr. Netanyahu’s Likud Party is in power, as it has been for most of the past 25 years.”
The editorial adds that whether or not the judicial reform should pass “is for Israelis to debate. Which they do, noisily, without Mr. Biden’s commentary.”
“The President’s Israel policy has been counterproductive,” it says, questioning, “How does it advance peace to indulge Palestinians in the belief that Jews are interlopers in Judea and at the Western Wall?”
“While Mr. Biden undermines the Netanyahu government, Hamas and other Iranian proxies are gaining power in the West Bank, activating another front against Israel. The new wave of terrorism against Jewish civilians will set back the Palestinian cause but advance Iran’s.”
While the Biden administration undermines the Netanyahu government, the op-ed cautioned that Hamas and other Iranian proxies are gaining strength in the West Bank, thereby creating another front against Israel. The resurgence of terrorism targeting Jewish civilians was predicted to set back the Palestinian cause while advancing Iran’s agenda.
