Flatbush Shomrim is urging businesses to be wary of transactions being made on credit card processors after an individual attempted to steal thousands of dollars from multiple businesses. Sources tell YWN that the scammer first targeted grocery store on Nostrand Avenue between Ave. I and Ave. J. He picked up several products and went to check out, telling the cashier that he didn’t have his credit card on him and requesting to punch the numbers in manually on the store’s mobile credit card processor. The cashier obliged and handed over the machine. But instead of putting in a credit card number, the thief placed a different transaction – to give himself a $3,000 “refund.” He then left the grocery and went to a nearby restaurant where he pulled the same scam, this time for the sum of $1,000. Shomrim is now urging businesses to be wary of anyone requesting to purchase items by manually putting in their payment info, as well as advising them to check all transactions immediately after they are placed.
