The worst pandemic the US had ever seen was the H1N1 influenza in 1919. In 1920 the Republicans won the largest majority that they had ever won. 10 US Senate seats, 63 US House seats, 7 governorships, and the largest popular vote margin ever for a Presidential candidate.
And it was broad. Republicans won every governorship outside the south, every US Senate seat outside the south, and even elected US Senators in Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. And outside of New York City — where Republicans flipped ten seats but Democrats still held on to seven — the only seats Democrats won outside the south were in Albany, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, western Colorado, Arizona, and two in northern California.
Today the Democrats have decided on a back to normalcy candidate for President, just as the Republicans did in 1920. Hopefully the country won’t be too far gone by the time he takes office.
