A book written at the Auschwitz death camp immediately after its liberation has been translated into English for the first time. First printed in Dutch in 1946, it may be the only such record written so close to the tragic events it depicts.
Written by late Dutch psychiatrist Eddy de Wind, Last Stop Auschwitz: My Story of Survival from Within the Camp provides a minute-by-minute account of his struggle for life. In 1943, while working as a doctor in Holland’s Westerbork transit camp, de Wind married his wife Freidel, a year before their transfer to the death camp. He reunited with her after his return to Amsterdam in 1945.
